Artist Sharvari Mali | Convergence Harmony (अभिसरण सुसंवाद)

At Nehru Centre Art Gallery, Mumbai | 06th to 12th January 2026

My childhood was spent amid the scenic natural surroundings of the Chandoli Dam (Sahyadri Tiger Reserve) in Sangli district. The colony there was surrounded by dense groves of eucalyptus trees. In front of us rose large hills, with the Warna River flowing through them. Since my father was an engineer, we lived for a long time in the vicinity of the Warna Dam, and the events unfolding in that nature-rich environment left a deep impression on me.

Whenever I went walking in the hills, I was constantly fascinated by the forms and colors of the massive rocks, the relationships between them, the piles of stones, and the moss that grew on them during the monsoon—their hues and textures never ceased to amaze me.

After marrying painter Dilip Mali and moving to Pune, my perspective on art gradually developed along with my formal art education. Watching Dilip create his paintings naturally drew me toward my own practice. I began to reconsider the natural landscapes and surroundings I had seen in my childhood. My thinking about form, color, and texture on the canvas moved beyond realism. The nature I had once experienced began to reveal itself anew. Each element of nature—soil, water, stone, vegetation—seemed to touch something within me, as if eager to give voice to the canvas. The ideas of abstraction are limitless and infinite, and my continuous endeavor through my paintings is to explore this very boundlessness.

As a person grows older, one changes—thoughts change, understanding changes. Likewise, after coming to a city like Pune, my way of looking at nature also changed within an urbanized environment. Through my paintings, I attempt to evoke an awareness of the nature I experienced in the past. I hope this effort resonates with you as something familiar and personal.
