Artist Yashica Dhabre |  Master of Fine Arts, Painting (MICA, USA)

Yashica Dhabre is a visual artist whose practice moves between figuration and abstraction, engaging with perception, structure, materiality, and the changing relationship between human beings and the natural world. Her work considers painting as both an image and a physical encounter, exploring how surfaces can hold traces of transformation, memory, and perception.

Dhabre holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Mumbai (2015), and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), USA (2025). Alongside her formal education, she has pursued studio-based mentorship with artists including Valay Shende, with whom she studied clay sculpture and anatomy, and Rameshwar Broota, with whom she studied composition and oil painting in Delhi. These experiences have informed her understanding of structure, form, the body, and material. During her time at MICA, Dhabre also received mentorship from Carol Armstrong in relation to her investigation of materiality, an engagement that continues to inform her practice.

Her recent practice moves between plywood and canvas as sites of material and perceptual investigation. In her plywood paintings, the grain of the manufactured surface remains visible as hundreds of translucent layers of oil paint are built across it. The works consider the transformation of the tree into an industrial material and the histories embedded within its surface. The prolonged process of painting allows the natural grain and the painted image to exist simultaneously, creating a tension between what is given and what is constructed.

Her canvas works extend these investigations through colour, gesture, artificial grain, illusion, and the physical relationship between the painted surface and the viewer. Across both plywood and canvas, Dhabre is interested in states of transition—between nature and manufacture, image and surface, abstraction and recognition, and the observed and the imagined.

Dhabre’s work has been exhibited in India and the United States. Her exhibitions include Unlock 2021 at Nehru Centre, Mumbai; Dialogues of the Diaspora Art Show at the Ven Embassy Marriott, Washington D.C. (2025); Hopscotch Art Show at Baltimore Innovation Centre (2025); and Chromafugue at The Peale, Baltimore (2025). Her recent exhibitions include The Gold Dynasty at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai (2026); Kala Samvad 4th Group Art Exhibition at Taj Art Gallery, The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai (2026); and Creative Vision, a group exhibition at Artist’s Centre, Kala Ghoda, Mumbai (2026).

In 2025, Dhabre was featured as an emerging artist in Artist Close-Up magazine. She was included in the Homiens Art Prize Commendable Artist List in both 2025 and 2026 and was named a Promoted Artist in 2025. She was also selected as a finalist in the Be Still Media Art Competition 2025.

Experience at Kala Samvad:
My experience at the Kala Samvad 4th Group Art Exhibition, held at the prestigious Taj Art Gallery, The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, was truly wonderful. The organisation was handled thoughtfully, from the inauguration and welcoming of artists and guests to the documentation, certification, curation, and the forum provided for artists to share their experiences.

I especially valued the exchange with fellow artists and the opportunity to encounter different perspectives and practices. I was also honoured to receive my certificate from Padma Shri Premjit Baria & Padma Shri Uday Vishwanath Deshpande and appreciated the warmth, encouragement, and insights I received from him and the other eminent guests, particularly their reflections on my work and its concept. The experience gave me a meaningful opportunity to connect with an artistic community.
